James DiBiase

Art & Design Extended Diploma Course Leader

James is leading a group of East Sussex College art students in creating artworks to be displayed in South Hill Barn during Walk the Chalk’s Celebration week.

For nearly 30 years I have been teaching Art and Design. Currently, I’m the Art & Design Extended Diploma Course Leader in Lewes at East Sussex College. It’s a real privilege and honour to work with young creative minds, be significant in awakening all their senses to the world around them and to witness their creative development and transformation. The best way to do this is to immerse ourselves in projects such as Walk the Chalk.

I’m a firm believer that event-led curriculum is where true knowledge and understanding exists. Whether the students are designing a costume, model box or poster for annual Royal Opera House Design Challenge or creating a mural for the NHS Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital or making artworks and installing a sculpture trail at Charleston or creatively collaborating with contemporary artist for a show at the Towner Art Gallery, the students and I always seize the opportunity to get out of the four walls of their classroom. Constantly rising to the challenge and making art that may question, could surprise and should delight all that experience it.
