Christian Funnell

Sculptor and metal artist

I have no separation from my work and life, development of ideas happens during the making process and from immersion in the sea. I am fascinated by people’s perceptions; why is one person’s holy water another’s discarded single use bottle.

My sculptures are often drawings in steel which are bent and folded into other dimensions.

The shared environment of the garden, park or cliff top makes the observer equal to the people who experience the same elements, this is a good starting point for the contemplation of our place in the world and what we choose to prioritise. On a base level,  it is important that people find shelter not in their car or computer but by feeling part of nature. I am very pleased that there is a marine reserve along some of the Sussex coast and want to celebrate the resilience of the animals that live under the waves.
