Blackpowder Morris is based in Lewes and has been going for ten years. It started as a spin-off of Commercial Square Bonfire Society when invited to visit the Bavarian town of Waldshut-Tiengen. From this rather basic beginning Blackpowder has risen through the ranks of Morris to become a side with a recognisable character and unique look. Our style of Morris is ‘Border’ style which allows for inventiveness and much of our repertoire is created by ourselves.
Morris is a combination of centuries-old folk tradition in this country with a style that emerged in late 15th century Spain, known as the Morisco, from which we get the word Morris. Our indigenous dance traditions featured dancing in circles and weaves, and waving handkerchiefs. The new import featured dancing in two facing lines with each side mirroring the other, use of sticks, and elaborate costumes.
